What To Expect With Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Gary Harding

As you start the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By bringing products to you, we can demonstate how different shutters, blinds, and shades would match up to your windows. Now you can make an informed decision by visualizing how each window treatment looks with your actual windows.

But what happens during an in-home consultation? And how does bringing samples to your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Some companies may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst consultation.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People looking at samples of window treatments.

Start by making an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you a variety of options for your preferred product. We will also offer other options, so you can know that your windows match your ideal.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and talk about what you want in a window treatment. We’ll spefically ask about your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also ask about how the room is used and what ambiance you want to accomplish. We want to execute your final vision, so the more you can explain, the better.

You may have to see many different window treatments to discover which treatments complement your interior design and protects your windows. Most people want to try out a few different treatments, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to coordinate with the walls. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll find the exact measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only plan to buy window treatments for a portion of the house. We perform this service because most of our clients ask to be able to order additional window treatments with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will carry out an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment rep. After all, the quality of the consultation reflects the quality of the window treatments.

Primarily, your rep should respect your home. They should come to your house on time, clean and presentable, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your representative should always bring product and company literature and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should always get a full written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a blank page or the back of a business card. And don’t take a quote before they take any window measurements. You want to understand how much the final bill will cost you. Also, look up references and online reviews to feel confident in your order.
